Wednesday, March 21, 2007 British Artist Commissioned To Paint Pope Benedict's Portrait British artist Michael Noakes has been commissioned to paint the first formal portrait of Pope Benedict which will be shown to the Pope at the end of April. The artist has said that he sees Benedict as slightly shyand has tried to portray that - together with the fact that he also  smiles a lot so has made him look cheerful. Also, the artist says he has portrayed Benedict with a 'bit of a twinkle' too!! Pope's 1st Portrait Shows Twinkle LONDON, MARCH 19, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The British artist Michael Noakes was commissioned for the first formal portrait of Benedict XVI. According to the London-based Times, Noakes saw the Pope as a slightly shy man and tried to portray that. "He also smiles a great deal," the artist said, "but it's an oil painting and is going to be around as part of the records for a long time. So I made him look cheerful, with a degree of gravitas and a bit of a twinkle." The portrait, which measures 48.5 by 32 inches (124 by 82 centimeters) unframed, will be shown to the Holy Father at the end of April. It will eventually hang in the Vatican.

In dono a Ratzinger un dipinto che lo raffigura Un ritratto alto m 2,20, ad olio su tela raffigurante papa Benedetto XVI sarà consegnato oggi allo stesso Pontefice, al termine dell'udienza generale, dal maestro Ulisse Sartini. Il ritrattista italiano aveva realizzato lo scorso anno anche il tondo di 137 cm. di diametro, sempre dipinto ad olio su tela, dal quale era stato ricavato il mosaico collocato in una delle navate laterali nella Basilica di San Paolo Fuori le Mura, accanto a quelle degli altri Papi. Il ritratto sarà conservato in uno dei palazzi vaticani. Nato in provincia di Piacenza, ma residente a Milano, Sartini ha realizzato anche il ritratto di Giovanni Paolo II, conservato nell'Aula delle Congregazioni in Vaticano, e insieme a molti altri dipinti esposti in chiese e cattedrali, due pale d'altare riproducenti l'una l'Annunciazione e l'altra il Battesimo di Gesù che sono state collocate nell'unica chiesa cattolica dell'Afghanistan, a Kabul all'interno dell'Ambasciata italiana.
